Neela Sakaria: Thank you for joining us. Can you please tell our readers about your motivation for making public your personal and professional experiences with the music industry and Death Row Records, through your book Married to the Game?
Lydia Harris: First of all, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to do this interview.
As you know, this is a story about my life and how I tried to make it in the Hip Hop industry. I went through so much unnecessary stuff. But I never gave up. My pain became my passion. My pain was helping people and not knowing when to let go. (People like ex-cons, thugs, lawyers and everyday ordinary business people). My passion was making sure that everyone at Lifestyle Records, (my former record label), got a feeling of family, even while at work. An example of this would be us taking trips together to the mountains, to ski or “the Lake.”
Neela Sakaria: In the book, you discuss your loyalty to your husband Michael Harris, despite his lengthy prison sentence. Did you ever experience moments of doubt or a desire to abandon it all?
Lydia Harris: I was in love with a man who was obligated to the game. Michael will always hold a special place in my heart. However, in reality I was never really married to this man, but to “The Game”. That is why I have chosen the title “Married to the Game.”
Through my pain I have learned what self-respect is and where true loyalty should lie -- that it should reside within my self.
Neela Sakaria: Is there anything you would have done differently?
Lydia Harris:Trying to satisfy everyone else’s needs…never really taking time to think about what Lydia needs.
Neela Sakaria: What do you hope that readers (especially women) take away from your story?
Lydia Harris: One of my life goals is to reach out to as many young people as possible. If I can help one young person achieve their dream or life goal, then I shall feel successful. This applies to girls and boys of every ethnicity, race and origin.
Neela Sakaria: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Lydia Harris: Life has taught me some really tough lessons and I found out things about my own personality that I didn’t know existed. People that I loved didn’t seem to love me back in the same manner that I loved them. I really didn’t know when to let go. It took a long time for me to learn. Through that entire internal journey I learned who Lydia was. I found out that she was strong, a great businesswoman, Mother, Sister, Daughter and friend…and that her life is really worth living.
I know you are probably thinking…’Lydia what is your point?’ “Don’t let anyone make you feel like you can’t achieve your goals!”
Neela Sakaria: Thank you very much for your time.
Interview Note: There were several interview questions on which Lydia Harris declined to comment.
