Description:
Using the figure of a prostitute as the central image, figures of the common streetwalker, the frail geisha, the repentant Magdalene and others, this series of poems searches out their innermost thoughts, dreams, sorrows and regrets. But more than this, the verse engages the reader on several levels at once: it is a cliché to say that those who have yielded up their integrity in dubious pursuit of success, materialism, and flashy obsessions have prostituted themselves; but the emotional cost and spiritual loss is nevertheless profound and bears examination. The symbolism throughout has some affinity with biblical symbolism, but here is no Old Testament condemnation, no moralistic tract. Instead there is an empathetic view of the experience of those who are not so different from ourselves. The bittersweet verse, with its rich imagery and effortless rhyme, is as sad and beautiful as the subject itself.
