John Lescroart was born in Houston, Texas on January 14, 1948. He started writing as a student at the University of California-Berkeley, where he majored in English. Following college and a job with a telephone company, he traveled around Europe, singing folk and country-rock music.
He won the 1978 Joseph Henry Jackson best novel award for under-35 California writers with the autobiographical novel Sunburn. While helping his wife raise their two children and working in legal, bartending, musician, and social service positions, he still found the time to write numerous novels including Dead Irish, The Vig, and Son of Holmes. After a brief battle with spinal meningitis in 1989, he became a full-time author.
