Sid Banner dropped out of East New York Vocational High School in Brooklyn, New York at the age of 15. After leaving school, he held various jobs in Manhattan and played billiards. He learned three-cushion billiards from numerous great players including Joe Procita, Joe Brown, Gene Levy, and Abe Rosen. In May 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After serving a short term on the USS Tarawa aircraft carrier, he was honorably discharged. In 1946, he opened Rockaway Billiards in Far Rockaway, Queens County, New York and in 1988, he opened Boca Billiards in Boca Raton, Florida. In 2005, he wrote the book 3 Cushion Billiard Systems.
