More DescriptionThe American Civil War - a divided nation, economic battlefield, and a way of life torn asunder. Yet two young adults follow a path to stay grounded to their Southern beliefs, their hearts brought together in a common bond of survival. In this tumultuous tale of the destruction of a way of life and the value of the hard-working man, Madeline McCall and William Hutchinson find solace in each other. Can their love and their core ideals be saved as our nation and their families fight to survive?
On principle alone, Madeline cares more for the longevity of her family's bookstore, three generations old, than the unrest at the government office in Frankfort, Kentucky. Even though her younger brother, Austin, is slated to take over the bookstore, his beliefs become more politically driven, pushing Madeline to learn more about the business than just the books on the shelves. When he joins the newly formed Confederate Army, all thoughts of books and politics are put aside as her family waits on bated breath for letters from the front-line.
As the next in line to inherit an expansive wheat plantation's fortune, William knows his place has always been by his father's side but they never quite see eye-to-eye on the politics of the business. His sister, Grace-Ann, has been studying to be a nurse at one of the most prestigious universities in New York. It is through his sister's letters that William realizes the true impact secession has not only on the survival of his family's plantation, but also on his Southern family values.
Madeline and William are uniquely set as the narrators of the novel and reveal what REALLY happened in the South during one of the most enigmatic and often misconstrued times in American History.
