More DescriptionA Vagabond's Journey by Melanie Eve Miller is the life-study of a boy's journey through childhood during the Great Depression. As contentious, deprecating, and harsh as it could possibly be, one young boy will come of age to realize that his father's love is heir apparent, if reckless, and that a man simply does what he can with what he has. Meet Erling Madsen, the third and youngest son of Danish immigrants in Duluth, Minnesota. After the early death of his mother, his domineering father sends him to live with relatives. Shuffled among well-intentioned kinfolk before finally ending up back under his father's roof with his two older brothers, he never feels as if he belongs or is wanted. After the stock market crash of 1929 leaves the family in dire straights, the four will scramble for a new beginning and relocate to San Antonio, Texas in search of a better life, only to find there isn't one. A determined and spirited Erling leaves home on his own accord in order to find work and ends up riding the rails as a hobo. Years later he returns to seek some sort of reconciliation with his father, some amount of peace and forgiveness, and to eventually find his place in the world.
