He served with the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Pelham, Korea on the DMZ and the 5th Infantry Division at Fort Polk, Louisiana. While in Korea he deployed for Team Spirit in 1983 and attended the Republic of Korea Ranger School. He details the tensions along the DMZ during events such as the downing of KAL flight 007 and President Ronald Reagan's historic visit. While in Louisiana he deployed to Germany for REFORGER in 1984. His description of Army life at Fort Polk will bring back memories for anyone who served in the Army!In the Coast Guard he was an enlisted man obtaining the rank of master chief petty officer (E-9), was commissioned as an officer, and retired as a lieutenant (0-3E). He served at several shore stations and afloat in the Sumac (WLR-311), Seneca (WMEC-906), Tampa (WMEC-902), Eagle (WIX-327), Sherman (WHEC-720), and Dependable (WMEC-626). In Eagle he sailed on her summer 1998 cruise. While in the Sherman he held the position of command enlisted advisor and made her historic deployment to the Persian Gulf and circumnavigation of the globe in 2001.
