More DescriptionSome wise, old sage once said the lines between philosophy, science, and mysticism blur at the boundaries of human understanding. The truth of those words are explored through the lives of the main characters in the book. Each one turns the lenses to bring every boundary into focus - none more adept than the tragic Tom Knight. Turning the lenses comes naturally for him, with one bitter exception: The lens that reveals the meaning of his life is beyond his reach. The story begins in 1976 as Tom, a brilliant, young, college engineering student, approaches his mentor and world-class physics professor, Harrison Schafer. Tom presents a new concept that redefines the modern understanding of physics. Schafer encourages his star student, and offers a statement that becomes the metaphor for Tom's life: "Numbers...mathematics, algebra, calculus...they are all God's alphabet, Thomas. And physics...physics is the tool we mortals use to read God's sentences. He hasn't made it easy for us. We stumble through this existence like blind men lost between the darkness and the night, struggling to find any nugget of truth, to understand what this world, this life, truly means." 18 years later, now a construction worker, Tom travels from Atlanta to a little backwater community on the Georgia coast, Tybee Island. With him is his best friend and employer, the ruggedly handsome and good-hearted Jack Rumble. There, Tom will meet the beautiful and strong-willed Jessica Chandler and her intellectually gifted teenage daughter, Tracy. Jack will meet the voluptuously alluring Paula Steele. Relationships emerge and evolve as each character turns the lenses to understand their lives. The book is a love story, but also carries significant observations on science, society, and mysticism - all explained by book's end. Provocative and insightful, Between the Darkness and the Night is a journey of discovery about the meaning of life - a song for the human condition we all endure.
