As an unregistered paranormal in a society that considers that state to be criminal, Kelly has been on the run her entire life. She is hunted by powerful enemies, including the Paranormal Security Agency--the mysterious PSA--and the League, the agency's private police force of paranormals tasked with maintaining order among its own people. Corrupt and ineffective, the League relies on fear and intimidation to exert control; they also hunt Rifters, creatures of varying moralities from another dimension, and enforce registration, a policy that causes terror among both normal and paranormal populations.

Kelly and Mace, her mentor and protector, must find a way to stay one step ahead of her many enemies. What's more, Mace is also charged with protecting Kelly--without her knowledge--from her own secrets, especially her ability to open gates between dimensions. It's a unique power, both feared and desired by those same enemies, including a determined group of Rifters who need Kelly to rescue their own loved ones who are trapped in parallel dimensions.

When she and Mace are captured in an ambush, Kelly must make an impossible choice: enter the League registration program, or else the PSA will prosecute Mace for crimes he did not commit.

In order to survive, Kelly must learn to embrace who she truly is--before she becomes a slave to another's desires.
