More DescriptionAccording to the GIAC, a Certified Windows System Administrator (GCWN) is supposed to have the knowledge and skills necessary for configuring and managing the security of Microsoft operating systems and applications. The knowledge domains include: Dynamic Access Control Operating System and Applications Hardening PKI Management Restricting Administrative Compromise Securing IIS Web Servers Securing Network Traffic and Ports Securing PowerShell This book has 3 different types of content. The first type covers some basic background security knowledge. The second type gives an introduction to the various facilities offered by the Windows OS. The third type deals with Windows specific security issues. To succeed in the exam, you need to read as many reference books as possible. There is no single book that can cover everything! You should use this book together with other reference books for the best possible preparation outcome. You should download the evaluation copy of Windows Server 2012 and play with it. Get the ISO image file and burn a DVD disc out of it, then perform installation accordingly. The exam covers multiple different Window versions. We use Windows 2012 for demonstration, but the concepts apply to WinServ 2008/2008R2, Win7 and Win8 as well. Windows 8 and Server 2012 share the same code base, therefore those tools for Windows 8 deployment often works well for Server 2012. Similarly, Windows 7 and Server 2008 share the same code base. 2008R2 is different - it is closer to the 2012 side. Keep in mind, Win7/Win8 security settings should be configured through Group Policy on the domain controller whenever possible. The biggest difference between Windows Server 2012 and the 2008 counterpart is the UI. Most underlying infrastructure, methods and principles are highly similar. Server 2012 uses the Windows 8 UI. The traditional Server Manager, File Explorer, and Control Panel tools are still there, all with new faces.
