More DescriptionI Beat the Odds' is my story as a successful survivor of torture and abuse at the hands of my mother. I grew up dirt poor in Greenville, Mississippi in the home of an explosive single mother who was an emotionally unbalanced alcohol and drug addict. She tortured and abused me from the day I was born, until the day she died. Although my siblings were abused to some degree, I received the brunt of her abuse. It is often said that she singled me out. She systematically isolated us from family, friends and the community; so she could destroy us.
I broke my family legacy of alcohol and drug addiction, abuse and destructive patterns of behaviors. I have changed my family legacy by creating a new family legacy through my three children. Yet, I am facing and beating my odds because I became a fighter, survivor and soldier.
I am living proof that beating the odds is a process not an event. Every day I am taking this journey. I am determined and committed to be a successful survivor. I have three godly, educated, successful and well balanced young adult children. I have obtained a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Counseling. In spite of the monster I possess a peace from God that has passed all my understanding.
Today I realize that childhood is only preparation for adulthood. My life experiences afford me the focus, discipline, perseverance and ability to write about my amazing journey. As you read you will run through a scale of emotions from sadness, anger, exhaustion, but my hope is that you will be inspired, motivated and empowered. It will remind, inform and reassure you that no matter your circumstances, you can successfully rise above them, if you want too. As you read I encourage you to do an introspective examination to determine if you are living a life of success or failure. You will understand that success is in the eyes of the beholder, because success to one person is not success to the next person.
