More DescriptionHaving developed an intense affinity for Theo en route by ship from South Africa to England, Inge feels compelled to renew the relationship when his wife is killed in a firefight in Quebec and he returns to his family's Bushvelt farm in deep sorrow. Their reunion fueled by their shared devotion of Olaf, her father, is almost instantaneous and she moves in with him and becomes pregnant with their first child. Theo decides to join Olaf in his business and they leave for Sweden to prepare him to take over the Western hemisphere business out of the United States. Theo engineers a reconciliation between Inge's parents and her mother stages a double marriage ceremony between her parents and her marriage to Theo. Theo and Inge move to Nevada in the Sierra Nevada Mountains above Reno from which base Inge continues her women's apparel design business with her partner in Southern California and Theo establishes a research program into more sophisticated uses of fell-spar in high performance lenses and related products. Soon Annie their first child is born and they hire Susan, an English nanny to help raise their first born. She winds up spending more time at the research institute with the child, also helping Theo administer his business. In exchange, Theo enrolls her in higher education programs and personally involves himself in rearing the child. Shortly after their second child, Andre, is born, Theo acquires a twin engine airplane and teaches Inge to pilot the craft and learn all the regulatory requirements for a pilot's license. Makasa, the tribal chief on the farm, dies and Theo feels it incumbent on them to fly back to attend his passing ceremonies. Two pickup truck loads of masked men show up to punish them for being so familiar with a native chief. Theo shoots out a front tire on each of their trucks and alerts his neighbors with a third shot into thin air. They apprehend the white supremacists and charge them with attempted murder as Theo and Inge quickly fly back home.Inge has her second son, William, and with business flourishing, Theo takes the whole family back to the Bushvelt farm for a two week immersion in African wild life. They bond with his parents and the children thrive on the experience.Inge becomes increasingly alarmed by the close relationship of Theo with Susan who can't find a beau that could come close to matching what she feels for her boss. Inge's pregnancy with her fourth and last child weighs heavily on her demeanor even to the point that she would accept a polygamist situation with Susan. Theo sets in motion a search for a well qualified person to take charge of the research institute and leaves it to Susan to administer the process. She favors Dr. Steven Murdoch who outshines his two competitors and accepts Theo's offer. He is invited home for dinner and gets carried away by their children and over time becomes enamored with Susan. Fiona, Inge's second daughter is born and she decides to gradually wind down her apparel design business to devote full attention to raising their gifted children.
