Kangaen is the story of Mykal, a young man who impulsively comes to the aid of a beleaguered woman during her fight with a monstrous creature, and as a result is forced to leave his home to avoid retaliation against his family and town. Escaping to a neighboring land reputed to harbor a mystical artifact, Mykal is chosen by its guardians to wield it: Kangaen, an ancient sword with unique powers. But it is not long before he himself is attacked and possessed by a Demonic entity, servant of a sinister master who fears Kangaen's power. A diverse group of women and men aids Mykal in a quest to reach the distant magic academy on the island of Shara, where he hopes to be freed of the demon's influence and better understand the true nature of the blade he carries - and the enemy he seems destined to fight.
