Antique jewelry among her mother's possessions leads Kate to believe that her mother was betrayed by an aristocrat. Under a penname, Kate writes letters to The Edinburgh Review denouncing aristocratic decadence and clerical hypocrisy. Letters in response appear from Lady Belinda Lushington, chiding Kate for extremism. Meanwhile, observed by the elegant and reserved Sir Hugh Cary, Kate fends off undesirable suitors in unconventional ways. Hugh is guardian of his two nieces who live with their grandmother, a friend of the Camerons. Kate and Hugh feel an irresistible attraction, but their independent egos clash repeatedly, especially when Kate rushes in to prevent Hugh's old flame from compromising him in the eyes of her jealous husband. At length truth emerges that shocks everyone concerned in the tangled past but leads to forgiveness, reconciliation of family members, and love and marriage for Kate and Hugh, who turns out to be "Lady Belinda Lushington."
