More DescriptionWhen the Sacred Band fell they did not fall alone. Their cities, their armies and all the nations on their borders were shattered into chaos. When empires fall, some sing the triumph of liberty while others wail the dirge of calamity.
This is a story of possibilities and dreams, vanity and regret. It takes place in a world that is at a tipping point of change. These changes are witnessed by those who seek to prevent them. Their early successes beget allies, allies beget trouble, trouble begets loss and loss begets revelations of such worth they could change a life or an entire culture.
In the end, one person's tragedy is another's miracle.
Those who face change are diverse. There is Ryered, a general of the Sacred Band who has less trouble winning battles than he does managing his officer's elitism and his soldiers' passion for revenge. There is Stacouwa, a barbarian whose bluntness proves more civil than centuries-old traditions. There is also Helland, an aristocrat who struggles to earn herself a place in her people's pantheon of gods. Lastly, there is Cident, a young man of the Sacred Band who finds himself subject to abuses of power from the lowest of people all the way up to a member of the Sacred Band itself.
These are people who not only face radical changes in their communities around them, they also undergo deep changes themselves. They strive to acquire what personal strengths they already understand. Through adversity, they find more strength than they could imagine. In some ways, that is their salvation. In other ways, it is the cause of more loss than they could imagine.
The stories presented in this novel parallel those told in Sacred Guilt, the first novel in this series. The time period is the same, though societal changes are seen from the perspectives of different characters.
