At first willing only to provide food to the young men covertly fighting against the Japanese, Bell eventually became fully involved in the Filipino resistance movement and rose to the rank of major in an island-wide guerrilla army. With a price on his head and his capture eminent, Bell, his wife, and two teenage sons were smuggled across the island and, on February 6, 1944, escaped on board a cargo submarine delivering arms and ammunition to the guerrillas
