To a certain degree they make the mesmerizing diversity of information available online manageable. Currently, they are the most effective way to retrieve information from the web quickly and efficiently for both professional and home users. The most widely used search engines are Google, Bing and Yahoo, with Google occupying a prominent position in Europe with a market share of more than 90%. Yet the way that search engines operate is still not very transparent. Neither providers nor users of online content are fully able to understand what kind of information is being selected and prioritized according to which criteria. These conference proceedings address these and other questions from multi-disciplinary perspectives. German description: Suchmaschinen kommt eine zentrale, kaum zu uberschatzende Rolle bei der Nutzung des Internets zu. Die schon seit langem unubersichtlich gewordene Informationsvielfalt im Netz wird durch Suchmaschinen zu einem gewissen Grade beherrschbar. Derzeit stellen sie im beruflichen wie im privaten Kontext die wohl wichtigste Moglichkeit dar, netzvermittelte Inhalte schnell und effizient zu erlangen. Die meistgenutzten Suchmaschinenbetreiber sind Google, Bing und Yahoo, wobei Google mit einem Marktanteil von mehr als 90 , % eine herausragende Stellung in Europa einnimmt. Die Funktionsweise von Suchmaschinen ist dabei nach wie vor wenig transparent. Sowohl fur den Anbieter netzvermittelter Inhalte als auch fur deren Nutzer ist nur schwer erkennbar, welche Informationen nach welchen Kriterien selektiert und in eine Reihenfolge gebracht werden. Diesen und weiteren Fragen widmet sich der vorliegende Tagungsband aus multidisziplinaren Perspektiven.
