The story opens with a wedding and a robbery. The real drugs, the counterfeit drugs, the stolen drugs... And so it goes on. But the real story is about a tree, a Spanish Oak or Encina. Growing slowly over a number of centuries outside the village of Pórrostujar, it is now being threatened by the mayor's building project for which he has corruptly granted himself permission. What to do? Toby has some bright ideas and Jesús lends him a hand. Tenienta Carmen is drawn into the Encina Project but has to juggle her role as Guardia with that of tree-hugger. There are dire consequences...El Capo hasn't given up the idea of punishing that annoying woman - Carmen that is - and assigns two of Granada's dirtiest Guardia to Varigo, looking for ways to trip her up. Inspector Jefe José Blanco falls for the prostitute Barbara but...Meanwhile, the villagers still hope to bury their civil war dead and Jesús hopes to bring about a reconciliation between two cousins who haven't spoken for 70 years.
