More Description
Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) was an English novelist and dramatist.
The Monk is Lewis' first and most famous novel. Written when he was only nineteen, it is a lurid tale of ghosts, demons, revenge, innocence, and seduction. It was an instant sensation, praised in some quarters and condemned in others as blasphemous.
Together with Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otronto (1764) and Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), The Monk is one of the novels that form the foundation of the Gothic genre, and a major influence on authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and H.P. Lovecraft. The Deseret Alphabet Classics series provides Deseret Alphabet editions of some of the great works of English literature and LDS theology. Our goal is to encourage the use of the Deseret Alphabet by making worthwhile reading material widely available.
