In short, this old macho, for it does come to us through ancient times, asks men to image themselves in brute strength with a desire to go to war, a strong face that will disallow tears, and a superior attitude over women that will sanction despicable abuse of thought and deed. This macho is the bread winner, the head of the household, the tyrant of discipline and punishment and the great reasoner undeterred by affect and effect. The new macho is born from one quality: compassion. Compassion guides the man toward the ancient dictum "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" -The Golden Rule. Or go to any religious philosophy and extract the concept of brotherhood from the faith and know what it is to live in that spirit and find the new macho. You can also find the new macho anywhere you are asked to "do no harm" - from the Hippocratic Oath to Buddhism. To do no harm is a compassionate stance. To live in brotherhood, treating others as you would prefer to have them treat you with an eye to do no harm is a compassionate philosophy which allows men to be virile in their humanity.
