The Story of Bill shares the life of a Minnesota farm boy. Though Bill left the farm while in high school to find work in the big city of Minneapolis, the farm kept calling him back. Bill's careers or hobbies included raising hogs and dairy cattle, dry cleaning, auto mechanics, flying, baking, 4H and livestock showmanship (with his children), driving a taxi cab, electrical wiring, plumbing, carpentry, real estate, picking and packing parts for John Deere, being a dispatcher for the electrical company, and repairing data processing machines (including the IBM mainframes that were predecessors to the modern personal computer). This book, like our country, spans the transition from the farm to the city, starting at the Great Depression. The Story of Bill is our story with the familiar patterns of life and love, loss and heartache, achievements and regrets. It is, in short, life lived.
