When his father dies, Philip Gray sets off to make his fortune with nothing but a violin. Several days later, Philip finds employment, playing for dances. There he meets an eccentric entertainer, Professor Riccabocca. When the professor learns that Philip is an accomplished violinist; he suggests that they perform together. The professor, however, absconds with the money. Fortunately, a young friend follows the professor and recovers the money for Philip. Shortly thereafter, Philip meets Henry Taylor, a runaway from a good home in New York City. When Henry's money is depleted, he is too ashamed to return home until Philip persuades him. The two show up on the Taylor's doorstep, apprehensive of their welcome and their uncertain future.
