More DescriptionThe language homework covers third grade usage, punctuation, capitalization, expression, reading, and spelling skills. It also includes bibliographies, outlines, and parts of a book: table of contents, index, and glossary. In addition, it's comprised of guide words, alphabetical order, and dictionary skills. A few of the reading skills are synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, base words, facts, opinions, homophones, main idea, inference, vocabulary/context clues, and comprehension. Further skills included in the homework are figurative language and parts of a letter. Most of the skills covered are usage, punctuation, capitalization, and expression. Explanations for most skills are given the first time the skill is covered in the homework. The skills are covered in many standardized test taking formats that are seen on the LEAP, iLEAP, and PARCC tests. For example, DAZE, sentence wraps with one mistake type, sentence wraps with multiple mistake types, regular sentences where students must choose the one written the best way, numbered paragraphs with questions about the numbered sentences, and numbered paragraphs with underlined parts that have questions about those underlined parts. This homework has been proven to work in a Title I high poverty, Blue Ribbon school. It has been a creation in progress over a six year period in a departmentalized third grade language class. The ELA homework has been tested and proven to work with low, average, high and gifted students. The testing tool that was used to measure its success is the iLEAP test and classroom student essay writing. The secret to its success is its repetitive nature. Punctuation, usage, capitalization, and expression skills are seen over and over again. Because your low students will see the skill so often they retain it and they are better able to apply the skill in writing because the homework asks them to rewrite it correctly. Also, because several different types of skills are covered, your average and high students soar! The homework is presented in many different standardized testing formats; therefore, when students are taking a standardized test they can focus all of their attention on the skill at hand because the format is so familiar to them. Their scores will soar!
