More DescriptionUkraine is a country with a long history of power struggles and strife. In 1922 Ukraine became one of the founding republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; for nearly 70 years thereafter, the people of Ukraine existed under Moscow's ofttimes harsh communist rule and socialist economy. In 1991 when the Soviet Union was dissolved, Ukraine became an independent nation and a period of transition to a market economy began. This transition has not been easy: for the year 1993, Ukraine holds the world record for inflation in one calendar year. It was in that year that a consortium of agri-businesses and a group of one hundred Iowa farmers took part in Operation Farm Ukraine '93. They spent three weeks in Ukraine sharing modern American farming techniques on various farm collectives. This book, the diary of one of those American farmers, provides a glimpse into the work of rebuilding a country and an economy, literally, from the ground up. From an official welcome in Kiev to assembling equipment in Odessa to the villages and collectives of rural Ukraine this is a story of international collaboration and cooperation.
