In 2002, Joanne was at an outdoor music festival, sitting at a shaded table, enjoying the music, and working on one of her favorite hobbies: creating puzzle grids and clues. Before long, word spread through the festival that there was "a crossword puzzle table" and a crowd formed. The feedback at the festival was very positive and she decided to publish Backpocket Crosswords .
