- The libraries, established in 1872 with just 500 volumes, have grown to include over 1.9 million printed volumes, 17,000 serial subscriptions, 5 million microforms, 130,000 audiovisual and machine readable pieces, and 120,000 maps. The libraries are a selective depository for federal documents and a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL Statistics). The collections are fairly centralized, with a large part housed in Carol M. Newman Library, the main library building.
