Danette Griffiths, a young teacher has decided to help her collie dog, Gwylm, learn air-scent tracking. Gwylm has been to many trainings, but sometimes is ignored or belittled because he is not a vicious police dog or a ground-sniffing bloodhound. Danette finally discovers that air-scent training for Search and Rescue is perfect for Gwylm, and the two together are good partners. They just need to trust one another. They discover that the Long Pines of Custer National Forest is a great place for them both to practice, and that Capitol Rock is a perfect landmark for using as a direction reference. It can be seen from a distance of many miles. Danette has also learned mantracking, the special technique of following footprints. At her new teaching position, she soon gains an intuition about those she works with and the children she teaches. Away from the school, she and Gwylm learn to trust each other. They each have a special intuition about the people they meet. They make some wonderful friends, but their intuitions are proven correct when the dog and woman discover a danger they had not expected.
Author K. Evans Odell knows the setting for her book, Search for Rescue, implicitly. She can see the top of Capitol Rock National Natural Landmark from her home. Her husband, Charles, who worked for the Sioux Ranger District of the Custer National Forest for many years, was a special resource. His work with many ranchers that lease forest rangeland, has given him a great understanding of the area. Many real recognizable sites are mentioned in Search for Rescue, however the author has taken slight fictional liberties in describing places to add character to the story. None of the characters are real people. Every person is fictional, coming from the author?s mind, but as they developed and became a part of the story, the author came to love some and wish she really could meet them.
Author K. Evans Odell is trained in Mantracking, and K-9 tracking, and describes techniques used in both styles of tracking for Search and Rescue.
