An analysis of the works and influence of Alessandro Manzoni, Claudio Magris, Italo Svevo, and Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa--four of the most important authors of Italian literature over the previous two centuries--this essay argues that the writers set the bar for judging the era's fiction. It illustrates how each of them represents a different point of view of Italy and their own particular manner of raising or destroying hope. The author also discusses how, while the four men can be said to form a collective Italian imaginary, they have also defied national confines and succeeded in conveying to readers across the globe emotions derived from the ethical conception of writing (Manzoni), ambiguous plays of consciousness (Svevo), the feeling of the decline of an era (Lampedusa), and the ancient dramas that erupted all around the world (Magris).

Un análisis de las obras y la influencia de Alessandro Manzoni, Claudio Magris, Italo Svevo y Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa--cuatro de los autores más importantes de la literatura italiana durante los últimos dos siglos--este ensayo arguye que los escritores ejemplifican la narrativa de esa época. Ilustra la manera en la cual cada uno representa un punto de vista distinto sobre Italia y un modo peculiar de suscitar o abatir esperanzas. El autor también discute cómo, a la vez que estos cuatro autores han formado  un imaginario italiano colectivo, han logrado superar también sus confines nacionales y logrado comunicar a cualquier lector de cualquier país las emociones derivadas de la concepción ética de la escritura (Manzoni), de la exhibición de los ambiguos juegos de la conciencia (Svevo), de la sensación del descenso de una época (Lampedusa) o de los dramas ancestrales que se desencadenan en todas las fronteras del mundo (Magris).
