More DescriptionA tale of local history set in the Old Wood Creek Valley, which now lies on the bottom of man-made Lake Candlewood. The story progresses through generations of the Wanzer family (first homesteaders at Squantz Pond). By the early 1800s, the Wanzers had spread out to own quite a large family tract (thousands of acres of farmland) - the center of which became the corners of four towns: New Fairfield, Sherman, New Milford, and Brookfield. In 1919, when the State of Connecticut seized all of the private properties that would be required for the creation of Lake Candlewood, Franklin Wanzer said goodbye to the last 300 acres of the Old Farm "Under the Hill" - which his father's father had inherited from his father - at the foot of Great Mountain. . . and moved to his old cabin on the south peak of Pond Mountain - where he still owned 10 acres. The Connecticut Light and Power Company took possession of all of the old Wanzer family farms (through eminent domain).
