Centuries have passed since apocalypse survivors fled Earth aboard the spaceship Earthrise, drifting helplessly in the vast emptiness until being picked up by a group of benevolent extraterrestrials. In the time that has passed since the mysterious apocalypse, the human race has rebounded, creating a blended civilization with their extraterrestrial friends, and developing the advanced technology that was once the stuff of legend. Their lives are good-but they are haunted by their origins.

Though the original survivors of the apocalypse are long dead, their descendants have grown up hearing the stories of the blue planet that their ancestors once called home, and of the mysterious destructive force known only as Asterean that shattered life as they knew it. But only now do they have the technology to search the expansive universe for their small planet.

And now, they're ready to return to Earth and find out the cause of the global destruction once and for all-and to restore Earth to its former glory. Leon Nestreado, heir to the new civilization's leadership, is the one who can lead his people back to their long-lost home.

But they still aren't ready for what they find. No longer the blue planet their ancestors once cherished; Earth is now a gray hell, a ruined world.
