More DescriptionJude The Obscure By Thomas Hardy Jude The Obscure revolves around sex, education, religion, incest and marriage -- difficult subjects in an era of suppression. The book was burned by the Bishop of Wakefield when it was published in 1895. Jude Fawley dreams of becoming a scholar at Christminster (seemingly modelled on Oxford). He teaches himself Greek and Latin while working in his aunt's bakery, but his ambitions are not realised. Jude is instead manipulated into marrying Arabella, a superficial girl. When Jude eventually moves to Christminster he meets his cousin Sue and falls in love. Sue eventually marries a schoolteacher, however, but the relationship may not stand the test of time.
