In August, 2010, researchers at Portland State University were awarded an exploratory grant to develop a formative assessment system for a new physics course called Energizing Physics. The course was developed by two physics teachers in Boston, and was tested by a dozen more physics teachers during the 2011-2012 school year. Nearly 1,000 students participated in the pilot, which took place in Oregon and Massachusetts. This monograph reports the results of our work.
