A white girl from North Louisiana and an African-American girl from New Orleans face the violent Collapse of American society by ending up in the same safe haven, an old mine in West Virginian refurbished seemingly for their use, but they don¿t know who their host is¿a philosopher-scientist named Christopher Argelle, aka Faustus, who¿s saved them from almost certain death. The girls are offered an once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn ancient, terrible secrets and powers from him. One chooses to leaves and face the outside world while the other takes Faustus up on his offer. Meanwhile, a young man who once assisted Faustus joins the new American army and is sent to find the rumored mine, only to find he must confront his old mentor and choose sides between his ambitious commander and the denizens of the mine. This is a semi-sequel to the book Krewe of Hecate.
