When I first read the manuscript offered me by the author, I was struck mostly by its imagery. More DescriptionWhen I first read the manuscript offered me by the author, I was struck mostly by its imagery. The rainy days, the cold nights, the lonely and sometimes meaningless meanderings we as people often encounter in our lives. The story is character driven and I like those kinds of stories where plot is important, but secondary. After reading this novel, I felt as if I had come to know these people and their struggles together to create a life out of destruction. Although the novel is long, the author seems to have kept in mind the fact that we have only a little time to read in today's hectic world. The chapters are short and readable in 15 to 20 minute segments; longer if you savor the imagery and think about the language. The language used in the novel is poetic, descriptive, and altogether entrancing. I can see the great grey genie hanging in the middle of the air, just as I can see the run down Behavioral Sciences Building of the University of Illinois far into the future. The nod to Frank Baum is particularly endearing as it is an acknowledgement.
