More DescriptionEight years after settling down in Bozeman, Luanne had the life that she had envisioned when she had first met Gordon. They had two wonderful children and lived in a huge house in a clean and safe community. Perhaps Gordon took his work too seriously, but Luanne accepted the tradeoffs that being married to a doctor required. Gordon spent very little time with his children, for example, and he was oblivious to the social and political compromises that a private practice in a small town required. Luanne did her best to keep Gordon in line, but he frequently antagonized patients and other physicians with his scientific approach and truth telling. After Gordon attempted to suspend Bozeman's most popular doctor for six months because he was incompetent but alienated the entire medical staff instead, Luanne was forced to take drastic action. Seeking out the Chief of Staff, who was intent on running Gordon out of town, she gained his sympathy and concern with a lump in her breast that other doctors had been dismissing for twenty years. The ruse worked. Gordon's practice was saved. But Luanne sacrificed far more than she had anticipated, including the whole of her person and the solidity of her marriage.
