The story covers not only the Folwell family and their farms, but the Mullica Hill community from the early family farming days, through the author's boyhood, when plows were still pulled by horses, through Depression-era struggles to keep the family estate and farms to the challenges presented to the author, a pacifist by WWII and his life beyond.
