More DescriptionThe OSS sent intelligence officer Tom O'Brien first to Washington and then to the backwater of the world war: the Middle East. The objective of his superiors was to keep O'Brien out of trouble after his unfortunate run-in with Soviet NKVD agents, but he is apparently incapable of staying out of trouble. With the surrender of Axis forces in North Africa, the focus of the Allied war effort has moved to Italy and the European Continent, while O'Brien's new turf runs from Cairo to Istanbul. Keeping up his contacts with the German resistance against Hitler and uncovering a German spy ring in Palestine, O'Brien is trying to make his contribution to the war effort, but it all begins to fall apart as the Gestapo moves against him in Turkey and his own counter-intelligence agents frustrate his efforts in Palestine. Old friends are in jeopardy and old enemies reappear as O'Brien's two operations merge unexpectedly. As events spiral out of control, O'Brien is caught up in a spasm of violence and revenge, but as the Taurus Express pulls into the station in Baghdad he finds that the despite the heavy costs, his operations weren't a total failure. This is a multilayered story of intrigue, betrayal, double agent operations, and the men and women who were involved in these activities, but it is also a story of the innocent victims of the war. The action swirls from North Africa to Istanbul in this World War II tale about the Office of Strategic Services and their intelligence allies in their covert war against the Axis powers.
