More DescriptionThis book, published in 1794, describes the design and use of a calculating machine, somewhat reminiscent of an abacus, but more elaborate, which enables the operator to perform all four basic arithmetical operations of summation, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as the extraction of square roots. It consists of ten horizontal rows, each of which has nine sliding balls, and two columns of dice, which are variously numbered on their six faces with the digits 0 through 9. The aim of the author was to enable illiterate persons to perform everyday arithmetical calculations. I have translated this work in the hope that it may prove useful today: an electronic calculator does not teach Arithmetic to the user, but this machine will.
