More Description
The Rule of Homogeneity represents a non-explicit rule reinforced by social, economic, and role based mechanisms in modern society. This rule evaluates others based on 'sameness' and the perception of 'difference,' thereby limiting opportunities for the latter.
Despite best intentions, societies attempt to socially correct misalignment between espoused vs. held beliefs has proven largely ineffective.
Statements of 'diversity,' 'initiatives,' and 'melting pot' represent approximations far from their intended destination. Instead, homogeneity is reinforced and celebrated by national immigration policies, business processes, and societal norms.
Applying an understanding of the 'rule of homogeneity' can help the community to have a broader conversation around diversity, inclusion, and the perception of difference. Perhaps then society and the businesses that represent them can become better aligned with their espoused values.
But what is to happen to those who fit non-homogeneous characteristics? This seems to be my story. A story of integrity and of failure, where both can be achieved simultaneously (and continuously) despite good intentions.
