Saint Irenaeus lived from 130 CE to 202 CE and is remembered for his profound faith in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. He was born and raised in Smyrna, studied with Polycarp at the university in Smyrna, and eventually relocated to Gaul. After being assigned to the church in Lugdunum (Lyon) for several years, he was elevated to bishop and established a school at the church. He was supported by the local boatmen and became their spiritual leader and friend.
