More DescriptionThe story of Marie Michell Robinson is an inspiration to all. She obtained her pilot's license by the time she was 18 years old, and at 19 she was enrolled in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program during WWII. Out of 25,000 applicants, she was one of only 1,074 who graduated. T.C. Christman tells the story of Marie's brief life, having died in a fiery plane crash in 1944 at the age of 20. Since WASP pilots were considered civil servants only, Marie did not receive full military honors at her funeral. Marie's niece, Cheryl Marie Michell, however, worked hard to correct that, and on Memorial Day 2013, Marie was honored appropriately in a grand ceremony. The famous poem "Celestial Flight" is integral to the story. The young soaring pioneer and the niece who shared a special bond with her decades later is a wonderful account of two women from two generations who each lived remarkable, notable lives.
