More DescriptionAbout Miss Rosa's BoyNick Tourville was an anomaly. Equal parts Irish and Native American, he grew up valuing character over color in a time when White was Right. Born to middle-aged parents who didn't survive past his eleventh birthday, he was raised by the young Black housekeeper and her husband, a foreman on the giant Limerick Farm, and the son of escaped slaves. These two people instilled in him a sense of humanity and filled his life with the love and happiness his frail mother had hoped they would.During the 20's and 30's, he grew up a White man, totally at home in the Black world. He was a lover, fighter, and as much a rascal as any other young man around. Embraced by the people who surrounded him, tolerated by the ones he looked like. Always a staunch supporter of his Black friends and surrogate family. The greatest influence on his life was the housekeeper, his Mam, Rosa. She guided him through the pitfalls and heartbreaks of growing up, providing him with 'siblings', her own children. This strong family supported him through many a crisis, and outrageous decisions on his part, like being the only White to attend an all-Black high school in the 1920's.
