A major figure in Macedonian culture, Koneski was instrumental in bringing recognition to its literature following World War II. As a linguist he wrote a grammar, history, and dictionary of Macedonian language, enabling all Macedonian writers to share a literary language. He also published one of the first books of poetry. Published steadily since then, his poetry is characterized by fine lyricism, extolling of nature, meditativeness, a delicate balance between emotion and intellect, and a cultivated form. Koneski has also published a book of short stories.
