In the illegal fighting pits of Lundarin, Brother Gaven is the "Holy Roller," a prizefighting priest with a solid right cross and a shaky command of scripture. He likes his sacramental wine and feels a sinful amount of pride when he wins. But, when those winnings go to a righteous cause, little things like "public intoxication" and "violence" are just a part of the Redeemer's plan.

Calissandra de Ruthianne is an ex-magician and aging war hero. Once a member of the legendary Queen's Adepts, she's now a destitute resident of the Lundarin Old Soldier's Home. Clashing swords and high adventure have given way to a humdrum life of late-night gambling and solitary drinking.

When an apparently supernatural monster tries to assassinate the queen, it's up to these unlikely heroes to uncover the truth. But, truth doesn't come easy in a city like Lundarin. The corrupt Homeguards are perfectly happy to pin the crime on Calissandra. And the Cardinal of the Church has a habit of silencing those who ask too many questions...
