More DescriptionWatershed 89: The Future for Water Quality in Europe, Volume 1 contains the proceedings of the International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control Conference on the Future for Water Quality in Europe, held in Guildford, UK, on April 17-20, 1989. The symposium provided a forum for assessing future prospects for resolving water quality issues in Europe. Topics covered range from contamination of drinking water to the quality of recreational waters and toxicological aspects of pesticides in natural waters. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume first provides an overview of water and sanitation services in Europe as a part of the regional program of the World Health Organization, known as "The International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade". The discussion then turns to the European Community water policy for the 1990s; the effects of acid precipitation and aluminum on water quality; and the presence of nitrates in water used for drinking purposes. Subsequent chapters explore metal releases from toxic wastes and their impact on groundwater and surface waters; the quality of recreational waters; and toxicological aspects of pesticides in natural waters. This book will be of value to scientists, politicians, and those who have an interest in water and water quality.
