More DescriptionThe story of the Batavia shipwreck is one of the greatest stories ever told. Indeed, when Commander Pelsaert's Journal was first published in 1647, it became a best seller. The story of the Batavia has everything: drama, romance, adventure, mystery, murder and mayhem. In order to give the reader the best experience and understanding to the most amazing events, it has been written as a historical fiction. There are also two other reasons: 1. The majority of the evidence is based upon Pelsaert's version which has been almost universally accepted although not entirely by his contemporaries in the Castle of Batavia. 2. It has been written so that it can be made into a major feature film. Nevertheless, historical evidence has been used as far as possible. It is the author's interpretation of that evidence written as historical fiction that adds even more interest to this book. The greatest departure from the traditional story has been the treatment of both Commander Francois Pelsaert and the Captain Ariaen Jacobsz. The more enthusiastic reader should compare this book to Pelsaert's original journal, the Ongeluckige voyage, van't ship Batavia, [The Unlucky Voyage of the Batavia], as well as Batavia's Graveyard, written by Mike Dash.Henry Van Zandenaustraliadiscovered.com.au
