Educated at the University of Utah and the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana, Rob Carter conducts research in computer-assisted design and teaches typography, graphic design, and computer graphics at Virginia Commonwealth University in Virginia. With the help of authors Ben Day and Philip Meggs, Carter wrote the book Typographic Design: Form and Communication, a richly illustrated source of information and ideas.
Carter has also written the books Working with Computer Type: Color & Type, Experimental Typography; and Working with Computer Type 2: Logo Types, Stationery Systems, Visual Identity. Carter's graphic designs have been exhibited by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York Art Director's Club, Society of Typographic Arts, Graphis Annual, Creativity, and the New York Type Director's Club.
