Author Biography
Anscombe, Francis John (Author)
Francis John Anscombe, 1918 - 2001 Francis John Anscombe was born in 1918 in England. He attended Cambridge University on scholarship and received a degree in Mathematics in 1939 and a Master's Degree in 1943. During World War II, Anscombe worked on the mathematical aspects of firing rockets. He also worked for a time at an experimental station, applying statistics to agriculture. Anscombe lectured at Cambridge before coming to the States and joining the faculty of Princeton University in 1956. He was then invited to join the mathematics department at Yale in 1963, by Tjalling C, Koopmans. Koopmans asked Anscombe to create a separate department for statistics and to build the graduate programs with Yale statisticians from all disciplines. Anscombe was the head of the department for six years and retired as an emeritus professor of statistics in 1988. During his years teaching, Anscombe wrote over 50 research articles and a book entitled "Computing in Statistical Science Through APL," published in 1981. He was known for his caution in applying computer models without necessary proof that the equation was correct and to avoid flawed interpretations of data. Francis Anscombe died on October 17, 2001 at the age of 83 at his home in New Haven.
