This book centers on the literary activities emerging out of the north Indian publishing house Ganga Pustak Mala and its house periodical Sudha, a literary, social, political and illustrated monthly in the first half of the twentieth century. Building on the defining work of Gérard Genette on paratexts as well as on scholarship on text-image relationships, this book charts the emergence and commercialization as well as nationalization of Hindi literary production in the city of Lucknow.
