Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II. GENERAL POPULATION GHOWTH. A number of interesting bits of information manifest themselves when one comes to a study of the perhaps 'dry columns of population statistics contained in the Census Reports. But such a study discloses, in a way, a general view of the conditions of a state as accurately as can be secured for any period about which no special writer took the pains to record data or describe the conditions. Care must be taken, however, in such a study not to draw conclusions too quickly. But a considerable uae of the data at hand is possible and profitable. Such statistics are most valuable indeed, in pointing out regions of preference; density of population; ratio of white to colored, of native to foreign born; etc., etc. These things after all are a foundation for a clear understanding of the economic, social, political, and to a considerable extent, the moral and even the religious development of a people. It is the interpretation of this data that makes it interesting and valuable. The following tabulation represents the general growth of the population for the State of Kentucky for the Census years 1850, I860, and 1870 respectively. Bzoeot where otherwise mentioned, the data for the present chapter is taken from the United States Census Reports for the years specified. 1850. Male. Female. Total.
